The Importance Of Health Services - 1067 Words

The push to standardize health care by using Health Information Technology and Health Information Management systems has produced multiple EHR platforms offered my more than one vendor. The multitude of EHR options and vendors offering such services, impacts the way Organ Procurement Organizations and the donation process directly. Hospitals could grant access to Organ Procurement Organization personnel, but not every hospital uses the same EHR vendor and platform. Hence OPO personnel must keep track of several hospital user names and passwords, OPOs may service hundreds of hospitals within a service area. Also, different EHR systems, vendors, and hospitals require different training, certification, credentialing, and renewal cycles†¦show more content†¦Electronic Health Record federal privacy and confidentiality rules and regulations were adopted and implemented to improve patient health. However, privacy rules and regulations such as HIPPA and HITECH were enacted without c onsideration of such entities as Organ Procurement Organizations. Organ Procurement Organizations are not affiliated or work specifically for any one hospital. OPOs operate more as a third-party entity with federal rights to access needed donor PHI held in Electronic Health Record hospital systems. Granting access to third-party entities to hospital EHRs is a direct violation of HIPPA privacy rules and regulations, but hospitals are federally mandated to disclose PHI to Organ Procurement Organizations. Such contradictive rules and regulations can hinder the organ recovery coordinator’s ability to execute the donation process effectively. Organs could perish, and patients could die because of lack of knowledge of federal rules and regulations governing hospital Electronic Health Record systems and Organ Procurement Organization interaction.
